A human sign-language interpreter signs your session. Listeners choose a sign language and see the interpreter in a window beside the captions. Sign language always comes from a person today: there is no signing avatar.

Sign language channel · Disponible

You arrange and pay the interpreter yourself. InterScribe provides the channel, the camera booth and the listener window.

Before you start

  • Your plan includes Sign language. It is a Beta feature: it works at live events, and we are still testing and improving it. It is not shown in the plan comparison: talk to a person and we switch it on for your workspace. Without it the section shows a locked note with a link to see plans: you cannot add a channel or turn one back on, but you can turn off or remove one that is already there.
  • For the interpreter's own camera: invite the interpreter to your workspace with the Interpreter role, as Members and roles describes. The role carries the Interpreter booth permission; without it the camera booth turns them away.
  • Or, for a video you already produce: a live video address that starts with https://.

Add a sign language

  1. STEP 1Open the session's settings

In the session's settings, open Sign language. The same section is in the new-session form, in your Event defaults and in conference settings.

  2. STEP 2Choose the sign language

Under Add a sign language, choose the Interpreter’s sign language. Each language can have one channel per session.

  3. STEP 3Choose the video

Under Interpreter video, choose Interpreter camera for a camera link the interpreter opens, or External video and enter the Video URL.

  4. STEP 4Add a note, if you like

Select Add a viewer note (optional) to add context beside the language, such as “Main stage”. Viewers see the sign language's name automatically.

  5. STEP 5Save the channel
Select Add sign language. The channel appears in the list with an on and off switch and Remove.
  6. STEP 6Send the link
For Interpreter camera, select Copy link and send it to your interpreter.

Sign channel changes save right away, separately from the page's Save. In the new-session form the channel is saved with the session, and the interpreter's camera link appears once the session exists. Sessions created from your Event defaults inherit the channels you set there; each session gets its own camera link.

To stop offering a language, turn its switch off, or select Remove and confirm. Viewers no longer see it.

What your interpreter does

  1. STEP 1Open the link

The interpreter opens your link and signs in with their InterScribe account. The page is titled Sign booth with the language.

  2. STEP 2Frame the shot

They frame themselves from the waist up, hands and face fully visible, on a plain background. Good light on the face matters more than resolution.

  3. STEP 3Go on air
They select Go on air. The booth says On air: viewers choosing the language see you.
  4. STEP 4Stop when finished
They select Stop to leave the air.

The camera booth sends video only. If the connection drops, it shows Reconnecting…. If the camera stops, the interpreter chooses it again.

What listeners see

  1. STEP 1Open sign language
While the session is live, listeners select Sign, or Sign language in the More menu.
  2. STEP 2Choose a sign language
They pick one in Choose a sign language.
  3. STEP 3Place the video
They choose Dock, Float or Pop out, and make it Smaller or Larger.

Captions stay on beside the interpreter. Until the interpreter goes on air, the window says The interpreter hasn't started yet. Their video will appear here. An external video can run a few seconds behind the captions, and the window says so.

Check it worked

  1. Ask the interpreter to select Go on air while the session is live.
  2. Open your listener page on another device and select Sign.
  3. Choose the language. The interpreter's video appears beside the captions.

If something goes wrong

  • You don't have the Interpreter booth permission in this workspace. Invite the interpreter with the Interpreter role, or add it to their role.
  • Something went wrong starting the booth. Try again. The interpreter reloads the link and selects Go on air again. If it keeps failing, tell us.
  • We couldn't reach your camera. Choose it again. The interpreter allows the camera in the browser and picks it again.
  • The interpreter video couldn't load. The listener selects Try again. For an external video, check that the address works.
  • That sign language already has a channel on this session. Each sign language has one channel per session.
  • Your plan no longer includes Sign language. You can turn off or remove a channel, but not add or turn one back on.
