Cable, Wi-Fi, hotspots and Starlink

How each kind of connection behaves with live audio, which to use for the computer that sends the sound, and what to keep as a backup.

Live audio needs a steady connection for the whole event. This page compares the connections you are likely to have, for the computer that sends the sound and for interpreters.

From steadiest to least steady

  • Cable: the steadiest. Connect the computer that sends the sound to the router with a network cable whenever you can.
  • Wi-Fi: works, but a cable is steadier. If you can't plug in, sit close to the router and use the 5 GHz band.
  • Phone hotspot: can drop when the phone gets a call or moves. Use it only as a backup, and keep the phone close and charged.
  • Mobile data: can drop when the signal changes. A cable or Wi-Fi is steadier.

The Interpreter Booth asks once, How is this computer connected?, and gives the same advice for Cable, Wi-Fi, Phone hotspot and Mobile data. You can change the answer later under How this computer is connected.

Video sites play well over Starlink because they load ahead. Live audio can't load ahead, so Starlink's short drops show up as gaps.

General advice about your network, not an InterScribe setting.

  • Satellite hand-offs: the dish hands over between satellites often, causing brief drops.
  • Upload swings: upload speed and delay change from minute to minute.
  • Obstructions: trees, roof edges and heavy weather block the view. Check the obstruction map in the Starlink app.
  • Mixed Wi-Fi bands: devices drift onto the slower 2.4 GHz band. Cable the agent computer to the Starlink router. Some Starlink routers need the Starlink Ethernet adapter for a cable.

Keep a backup ready

  1. STEP 1Have a second connection
Keep a phone hotspot ready as a backup for a cabled or Wi-Fi connection.
  2. STEP 2Test it before the event
Run the connection check and Test your speed on the backup too.
  3. STEP 3Switch when it keeps reconnecting

If the connection badge keeps turning amber or red, or the link shows as unstable, move the computer to the other connection.

Check it worked

The connection badge at the bottom right of the Console shows Good or Fair. See The connection badge.
