The Interpreter Booth is where an interpreter works a session: you hear the floor, take a language channel, and your microphone becomes what that language's listeners hear.
Before you start
- Your organizer gives you access. A member with the Interpreter role sees the Booth only: no dashboard, events, billing or members.
- If you interpret for more than one workspace, the Booth first asks Which booth?. Pick the one you are working for now; you can switch from the booth's menu.
- Use headphones, so your microphone does not pick up the floor. See Set up your booth audio, and Hear yourself while you speak for hearing your own voice.
Join a session
- STEP 1Open the BoothIn the Portal's menu, select Interpreter Booth.
- STEP 2Choose the session
Which session are you interpreting? lists today's sessions. The ones you are booked for come first. Select one, then Continue.
- STEP 3Choose the languageWhich language will you interpret into? lists the session's channels. Select one, then Continue.
- STEP 4Check your soundSelect Enable microphone and check sound and say something. The check is private, and you enter the booth muted.
- STEP 5EnterSelect Enter the booth.
- STEP 6Open your microphone
You arrive muted: nothing reaches listeners until you open the microphone. Once the session is live and it is your turn, select the big Microphone closed button, or press M. It then says You are on air.
The first time, the Booth offers a one-minute tour. You can take it again later from your account menu.
Take a channel
Under Channels, each language shows who holds it:
- Take it: nobody is on this channel. If the AI voice was speaking it, your voice replaces the machine. You take the channel muted: nothing reaches listeners until you open your microphone.
- Ask name for language: a colleague holds it. They have 30 seconds to keep it. If they neither keep it nor hand it over, the channel moves to you when the time runs out, so a colleague who has left or whose laptop went to sleep does not block the channel.
While you hold a channel, the big microphone button says You are on air or Microphone closed. Select it, or press M, to open the microphone and to cough-mute it again. While you are cough-muted, listeners hear the floor.
When a colleague asks for your channel
A banner names who is asking. Select Hand over now, or Keep it. If you do neither, the channel moves to them when the countdown ends.
Hand over for a break
- STEP 1Open the handoverSelect Hand this channel over next to your microphone.
- STEP 2Pick a colleagueChoose someone who is free, and select Offer it.
- STEP 3Wait for them to accept
You stay on air until they accept, so the channel is never left unattended. Select Cancel the request if they do not answer.
If nobody is free and your plan allows it, select the row under If nobody is free that switches your language to the AI voice, for example Switch Spanish to the AI voice. Your microphone closes and listeners hear the AI voice until a person takes the channel again.
If you leave the session while you hold a channel, listeners hear the floor until someone takes it. Hand over first if you can.
When the floor language changes
If the operator changes the floor language to the language you interpret into, your channel becomes the floor. You are taken off air at once: your channel is released and your microphone closed. The Booth tells you The floor is now that language, and offers the language that just opened, the old floor, with Take and its name. Take it, or select Stand by.
If you are free and the old floor's language opens, the Booth asks whether you want to take it: select Take and its name, or Not now.
When nobody is at the Console
If the session has not started and your plan includes interpreters, the Booth shows This session has not started with Start the session. Listeners get nothing until it starts, so start it when the floor is about to begin.
If something goes wrong
- The interpreter can't hear the floor
- Ask your organizer for help from Backstage: see Backstage requests.
