The listener page shows live captions in the listener's language, and lets them listen to a voice where you offer one. This page walks through it from the listener's side, so you can explain it to your audience.

The first time

The first time someone opens a session, the page asks Read and listen in and suggests the phone's language. They start in that language, or open the full list to pick another. They can change it any time.

The captions

Captions appear line by line as people speak. A few marks help readers:

  • Translating… shows while a line is being translated.
  • Not translated marks a line that could not be translated in time; it shows in its original language.
  • Corrected marks a line that was corrected after it appeared.
  • When a listener scrolls back, Back to live returns them to the newest line.

Someone who joins late still gets the captions already spoken. While earlier lines are translated, the page shows Translating the last two minutes….

The session tabs

Depending on what you turn on, the page has these tabs:

  • Captions: the live captions.
  • Session: the speakers, Languages in this session and Resources.
  • Highlights and Notes: the listener's own saved lines and notes.
  • Summary: the AI summary, once the session has ended. Until then it says Summary comes after the session.
  • Ask AI, when you turn it on and your plan includes it. See “What did I miss?” recaps.
  • Chat and Q&A & Polls, when you turn them on. See Chat, Q&A and polls.

The More menu holds the rest: Share this session, Catch up on what you missed, Ask the organizer, and after the session Download transcript, when each is on.

Highlights and notes

A listener double-taps a caption line to highlight it. Tapping a line offers Add a note to this line, Copy and Highlight this caption. Highlights and notes need a free sign-in, so they stay with the listener on every device after the session ends. See Listener accounts.

Messages listeners may see

The line above the captions explains what is happening:

MessageWhat it means
Reconnecting…The listener's connection dropped. Captions catch up on their own.
Captions paused by the organizerYou paused captions. They resume when you continue.
No sound is reaching usThe venue is not sending audio. Captions resume when sound comes back.
Captions are reconnecting on our sideSound arrives but captions stopped. They resume on their own; our team is alerted.
Captions are running a little behindCaptions catch up on their own.
A song is playingCaptions are unreliable during music and are not translated.
Can't reach live captionsThe listener's network may block captions. They can try another network, like mobile data.

When there is an incident on our side, a notice from the InterScribe status page appears on the listener page with Details.

At the end

When the session ends, the page shows Ended. If you asked for a summary, it appears in Summary. Listeners may be asked Rate this session: one tap on a score out of 5 goes to you and helps improve the translation.
