Church services

A weekly service run by volunteers: the sound desk feeds InterScribe, and the congregation follows in their own language on their phones. The same setup works for any regular gathering in one room.

The sound desk

A spare output from the mixer goes into the computer running the InterScribe agent. That computer stays on the whole service.

You need

  • A computer with the desktop agent
  • A USB audio interface or the mixer’s USB output
  • Power, and sleep turned off

Your week, step by step

  1. ONCECreate a recurring session and a roomThe room owns its AV channel, so every Sunday’s session uses the same sound desk automatically.
  2. SATURDAYTest the audio at the sound deskSelect Test audio on the agent’s card and speak at the pulpit. “We can hear it” means the sound arrives.
  3. SUNDAY · 45 MINStart the agent, then the sound checkSpeak at the pulpit. “Audio heard” means the whole path works.
  4. DURINGAuto-start goes live on timeWatch the pre-flight list and the connection badge in the Console.
  5. AFTERSummary and reportsThe summary, transcript and the session’s reliability report are ready. The summary needs a summary template.
What usually goes wrong on a Sunday
  • The sound desk laptop is on Wi-Fi while 200 phones join it
  • The laptop went to sleep during the sermon
  • A new volunteer changed the mixer output

The setting

One sanctuary, a service every week, and a team of volunteers who change from week to week. The preacher speaks into the pulpit microphone; the sound desk sends a spare output to a computer running the InterScribe agent; members and visitors scan a QR code and read or listen in their language.

Plan it

  1. Create a room for the sanctuary. It owns its AV channel, so every week's service takes its sound from the same desk. See Rooms and their AV channels.
  2. Create a session that repeats every week, set in that room. See Sessions and recurring sessions.
  3. Set up the agent on the sound desk computer. See Set up the desktop agent.
  4. Choose the languages your congregation reads and hears. See Languages and AI voices.
  5. Turn on Detect songs, so captions sung during worship are tagged and listeners are told the room is singing. See Get good audio into InterScribe.
  6. Add names and words your church uses to a vocabulary. See Glossary and context.
  7. Print one QR code for the whole series: Link the whole series (always opens the next date) gives one link that always opens the next service. See How your audience joins.
  8. If your church network filters what it lets through, send the allow-list to whoever runs it: interscribe.io, *.interscribe.io, scrb.live and *.scrb.live on port 443, and the live audio hosts we give you. See The allow-list for IT.

For scripture and song lyrics, see The Bible reader and Slides in the captions.

When something goes wrong

  • The sound desk computer is on Wi-Fi while the congregation's phones join it. Cable it to the router. See Crowded venue Wi-Fi.
  • The computer went to sleep during the sermon. In the agent, set Keep this computer awake to While broadcasting (recommended), or Always while signed in on a computer kept for Sundays. Closing a laptop lid still puts it to sleep. See Set up the desktop agent.
  • A new volunteer changed the mixer output. The sound check says heard silence or nothing heard. Unmute the channel that feeds InterScribe, and check the agent's Microphone. See Nothing is heard after go-live.

Anything else: the troubleshooting section starts from what you see.

The Sunday checklist

Sunday at the sound desk
  • Plug the computer into power and connect it to the router with a cable.
  • Unmute the mixer channel that feeds InterScribe.
  • Open the InterScribe Agent: it shows Agent is connected.
  • Run a sound check and speak at the pulpit: wait for audio heard.
  • Check the connection badge in the Console reads Good or Fair.
  • Put the QR code on the screen and at the door.
  • Leave the agent open until the service ends, and install no updates.

The full Sound desk checklist has more detail and a place for who to call.

Afterwards

With a summary template chosen, the summary is written after the service ends, in every language your congregation reads. Each language has its transcript. See Summaries and summary templates and Transcripts. To see who listened, and in which language, see Analytics: who listened, and how.
